(By Telegraph—Per Press Association.> GRIGGS TRIAL. JURY DISAGREE. MELBOURNE. March 10. The jury in the Griggs trial retired and after several hours returned to court where Hie foreman announced they had apparently reached a. deadlock, with no chance oT reaching a decision. The jury were then locked up for the night. FIREMEN ON STRIKE. BRISBANE. March 8. All the members of the Eire Brigade struck as a protest against the action of the chief officer in suspending a number of men for refusing duty. Alt the stations throughout the night were manned bv skeleton staffs, but luckily there were no outbreaks of tire, as the number of men available to-day is quite inadequate. The men returned to work, the Arbitration Court having decided to intervene and hear the dispute. NO SETTLEMENT. SYDNEY. March 10. A compulsory conference called to attempt to reach a. settlement in the bonus system dispute at Walsh Island failed iu its object. Hopes are nowcentred in a special meeting of Newcastle Disputes Committee, summoned for Monday. ROTARY CONFERENCE HOBART, March 10. At tlm annual conference ol the Rotary Club of Australia it was reported that arrangements had been made for the establishment of a Rotary journal lor Australia. The means of increasing work for the welfare of boys was also one of the matters discussed. Fred Birks was re-elected District Governor for the coming year.
