HOKITIKA BEAUTIFYING SOCIETY
A meeting of (lie Executive w.e held at the County Chambers at ■! o’clock yesterday afternoon. The lion 11. L. Michel, M.L.C.. presided. The minutes of the previous meeting were confirmed. The Hon. Treasurer acknowledged the following donations: Savings Bank. £2 2s ; Gas Company. £2 2s; Paterson . M.ichel and Coy.. £2 2s; Greymouth Watorsiders, £'2; "S. J. Preston, £1 2s; Mrs I>. Dowell, £1 Is; K. Haussmann, £1 Is. T). .T. Evans £l. ft was resolved to hold a gala afternoon on Cass Square on St. Patrick’s Bay. and Messrs Niven and Evans wore deputed to arrange the programme. On St. Patrick’s Eve it was decided to hold a dance in the Soldiers’ Hall, and it was resolved to ask the co-operation of the ladies. The Chairman referred to the great financial help last year from the annual ball arranged by the -1 .is* Club, ft was resolved to invite the Club to arrange a similar benefit this year during the season. The President commended tho good work done by the Borough Council in improving the reserves and beach, and spoke of the further work proposed on Cass Square. The offer of a grant of £2O from the Society towards tlie work in sight was confirmed. and £lO voted on account to he payable next week, was pass d on Mr Preston’s motion. Other accounts to the amount of £2'i, including a supply of daylight fireworks from London for the gala afternoon, were passed for payment. It' was decided to ask the Municipal Band to parade for the afternoon, and to ask the business people to dose for three hours during the niternoon, which will be a Government and bank holiday. It was intimated there would be several novelties arranged for aL the gala. including balloon ascents and balloon races. There would be a mouth organ solo contest, as well as a laughing contest, ft was hoped to have the co-operation of the Girl Guides in arranging special features for the occasion, including a parade of i lie Brownies. A. meeting of ladies will be held at 7 o’clock on Monday evening, .standard lime, to arrange with regard to stalls, and other features for the day and the evening of the dance.
