ROME. Feb. 28. The cinema fire at Mori ago resulted in a shocking disaster. 'I he number ~ of deaths is not yet ascertained, but { it is believed to be considerable, in- ym eluding many children. The display was given on the first floor of an old granary, constructed of wood, at which there were 300 spectators. A film caught fire, and the operators wooden cabin was quickly ablaze. The hall was filled with smoke, and men, women and children rushed to a single wooden staircase which collapsed. Podesta, the proprietor vainly trying to calm the maddened crowd. Many thus wore burned to death, asphyxiated or crushed to death. Meanwhile there were terrible scenes . in the village. Mothers rushing to see if their clililrcn were safe, weie unable to approach the burning building. , , Mori ago has no fire brigade and when the. firemen arrived from Treviso the building was a mass of cinders. Thus far forty bodies have been extricated from the ruins. Podesta and his wife escaped by jumping from a window. ELLEN TERRY’S BIRTHDAY. (Received this day a.m). LONDON. Feb. 28. World-wide congratulations were rereived by Miss Ellen Terry, including a telegram from their Majesties. Miss Terry was inundated with letters, sonnots, poems and telegrams, the lattei being numerous. The telephone was engaged all day transmitting.
