Mr Bruce (Prime Minister of Australia) has cabled Sir Charles Wakefield, accepting on behalf of the Government and people of Australia his offer of an Avro-Avian plane, adding: “Nothing could more fitly mark the great achievement of llinkler. I tee! sure that your gift will be an inspiration to the development of aviation in Australia.” CLAIM TO A CLIP. NEW PLYMOUTH. Feb. 2. An unusual petition was heard in the Supreme Court to-day when an order was made disentitling H. Betts to the Sutton Cup. presented for a mangold growing competition in South Taranaki. The application was made by C. G. AV ills. second in the competition against J. G. Ward and co-donors of the cup. on the grounds that Betts a farmer (aged 91) made his entry too late. The Court made an order for £3O damages to he reduced to a farthing, i' the cup was returned in a month. MINISTER OF WORKS. BLENHEIM, Fob. 28. The Minister of Works arrived at Blenheim last evening. After receiving deputations this morning ho left for Upper Awatere Anley with the object of traversing the proposed new stock route via Acheron Valley and 1 lanmer to Christchurch. To-night will he spent at Molesworth station. Tomorrow morning the Minister and party depart-on horseback into the hinterland of Marlborough. They expect to reach Hanmer by nightlnll and proceeds thence to Christchurch to join the Premier for a tour ol Central Otago. LORRY DRIVER SUED. INVERCARGILL. February 27 A claim of tIOUO general damages and £l2O 12s hospital fees, was unheld by the jury in the case Jolnv Herbison Kerr v. David Baird. Plaintiff, a schoolboy, was cycling along the Oreti lkv.cn Road to Invercargill on May 9th last, when defendant a driver of a motor lorry, overtook him and run him down, inflicting severe injuries to the right leg. the call' being torn away. Medical evidence attested that the hoy would probably lose liis leg below the knee, and won 11 never regain its lull use i‘ ; R. were not amputated. A EIRE. AUCKLAND. Fob. 28. A lire in the premises of Hart Bros Ltd.. Queen street, at 10 last night caused damage of several hundred pounds to the stock of clothing, factory goods, haberdashery, toys, etc. The building was undamaged. Clouds -of smoke, the interruption of the electric light circuit and the proximity.of fire caused an early termination of the session at Strand Picture Theatre, though at no time was there any danger from the fire.
