WHALER STRIKES ROCK
C.A. LABKKN SINKING. By Telegraph—Press Assn., Copyright. 1 XVKHGATMSnX. Feb. -21. A message was received from Halt Moon Bay, Stewart Island, late tonight that the C.A. Larsen, the 17C0 ton mother ship of the Boss Sea Whaling Fleet, went ashore between Faro Island and the neck of Stewart Island, while proceeding up Paterson’s Inlet to her hit sc at Price’s Bay. She has .just returned from a three months’ whaling expedition in the Boss Sen. and is carrying over 80,000 barrels of whale oil. estimated at one -million sterling. Tt is understood that the steering gear failed when a strong tide carried the vessel inshore. She struck a rock, which tore a hole in numbers ten. eleven and twelve tanks, forward. J'ivc chasers went to her assistance, and towed the boat up the inlet. stein first. The C.A. Larsen has a heavy list, and is filling rapidly, her hows being almost flush with the sea. and stern high from the water. The cargo will have to he transhipped, and it is stated that she will he unable to return to Norway this year. Towing operations arc still in pmgross.
