(By Telegraph—Per Press Association.) ( SOLICITOR CONVICTED. CHRISTCHURCH, Feb. 20. The Magistrate, Air Aiosley gave a reserved judgment to-day in the charge I against F. W. Johnson, Solicitor, Christchurch of using an unlicensed vehicle for heavy traffic purposes. The r facts, which were admitted were that <1 Johnston carried to his larm a quantity of kerosene for farm work, using i'or carriage a. motor caravan. The magistrate held that the keiosene was to be used for commercial pinposes, being for farming for profit, and that the vehicle was subject to the heavy traffic regulations. Before Air Levvev, S.AI. to-day, a Maori named Tom Dennis appeared on charges of negligently driving a motor car, and thereby causing the death of Edna and Faith Third, aged eight years and five years respectively. The children were knocked down by a car driven liv Dennis as they were crossing the road to school oil lobmarv Ist. - Dennis was also charged with driving in a manner dangerous to the public, hut the second charge was deferred . Dennis pleaded not guilty to the first charge and was committed to the Supreme Court for trial. LOR.RV RUNS OVER BOV. WHANG All I'll, Fell. 19. George Boswell, the 13 year old son of Thomas Boswell, carrier and contractor, of Hikurangi, was killed on Saturday evening through a lorry running over his chest. The driver, A\ . Myers, had entered at house at Waro, I leaving the boy on the seat. By some means lie started the vehicle and lei I out, lieing discovered still alive on the roadway by neighbours, who drove him to a doctor, hut on arrival the . hoy was dead. Feb. 20. n A serious fire broke out at Hllerslie s tliis afternoon and resulted in the comi- plete destruction of two houses. A two-storey house, in which two e families were living, took fire first, v and in a couple of minutes the building was an inferno. It lias been known for some time p that the City Council has acquired [ under the Public AA orks Act a site on Te Am Flat for the erection of a new milk station. The area concerned includes a small portion of Tory Street, one sale of Charlton Avenue, the greater portion of Alma Lane. ( and a number of houses in Francis t Place. t Last week notices were served on o some 37 tenants to quit their dwellings and other premises occupied by them. BATHING FATALITY. , DUNEDIN. Feb. 20. ,f A young man named Thomas Dick, aged 18. was drowned at St. Clair t«- ; c . night about 7 o’clock. It appears that a girl named Namie Green and a man named SamII uel Cameron got into difficulties and a man whose name is not known, went out to attempt to rescue, and he himself got into trouble, hut by the aid of a lifeline, however. Afiss Green and her would be rescuer )_ were safely brought ashore. and j Cameron was also saved hv the man who disappeared without divulging his v name. After the excitement qf the rescue K had died down a little the startling diseoverv was made that a young man (Dick) had been noticed some 50 J yards further out than the pair who J wore brought ashore, i- By the time the discovery was made e however, he had disappeared.
