RACEHORSE TRANSPORT BY RAIL
Hie lollowing reply lias been received b .v the New Zealand Country ltacing Club’s Association from the New Zealand Railways Board regarding free carriage of horses returning from race meetings : i Bear Sir, —-With reference to the representations made by a deputation from the New Zealand Country Bating Clubs’ Association which recently Wait ed on the Board, 1 have been directed to advise that the request for re-in statement of tlie concession of free re turn railage for racehorses returning from meetings, has been carefully con sidei'ed but the circumstances are such that the Department is unable to make any further reduction in this direction at present. The various concessions now avaii aide to the racing interests are on : generous scale and compare more tiiar favourably with the charges in force foi the products of the industries of the ■mminion which contribute substantia revenue to the Department. Regarding the statement made by : member of the deputation that a rebate of the return railage would result it increased entries for the clubs and tine cause larger numbers of people to pat ronisc the meetings, the Department lias, for some time past, carefully watched the passenger traffic to race meetings and lias found that despit the low fares available for racing pal rons, a cosnideralilo number who attend such meetings travel by roan transport. In these circumstances the Board is unable to agree that a reduction on the lines asked by your members would be remunerative to the Department. T am directed to thank your organisation for placing these matters before the Board but in the circumstances i‘ is regretted that the financial position of the Department, is such that at present’ no further concession can be granted.
