The De- , part men t regarded the offence as serious. SEQUEL TO SELWY.X TRAGEDY. CHRISTCHURCH, Feh. 10. The body of -Mrs Washhourne, whose husband, William Ilenrv Washhourne, shot himself at his father’s farm at Selwyn on Monday night after having made an attempt to shoot his wife as she lay in hod, was found this morning in a (lain near the farm homestead. The woman’s husband went into the room which he shared with her, placed a loaded gun against her head, and fired. Mrs Wash bourne saved her life by pushing the gun aside with her hand, the charge passing through the wall. The room was in darkness, so that Washhourne may have left supposing he had killed Ids wife. llq left tinroom and the house and shot himself dead. A letter was found in his pocket in which ho accused his wife of infidelity. Alter Washhourne’s body was found Mrs Washhourne was grief stricken. She was interviewed by a police officer and very soon afterwards disappeared. A search was at once begun and had continued until this evening when hoi holly was found in the dam. DISASTROUS EIRE MAR.TON, Feh. 16. A fire at four o’clock this morning destroyed the Argylc stables and Hull at Huntersville and also the premises of W. J. Ford, plumber. Mrs Hampton, confectioner, adjoining the hotel; the ’l’own Hoard Office, and a lurnKher’s shop narrowly escaped destruction, being badly scorched. Several cars were removed from the stables safely, hut a motor truck and an old model car were destroyed. The hall, stables and shops were owned by Ali* 11. .1. D. Mc.Vtanuway, and insured for £lOOll. Tile cinema material ill the hall, and Messrs 1- ranks and Smith’s (tenants) effects in the stables were covered by insurance, all of which* is in the New Zealand Office. The total damage is estimated at £3OOO. A FIRE. MASTERTON. Fell. 16. A lire to-night destroyed a motor truck valued at £2OO. and the shed in which the truck was housed; both being the property of Mr E. 11. Snackman. a carrier of Masterton. The motor shed was insured for £IOO hut the truck was uninsured. It is understood that the lire was caused* through a leaky- carhurel lor. AUSTRALIAN lid TARIFF. WELLINGTON, Feh. 15. A visitor to Wellington is Hon. W. Bennett, a member ol New South Wales Legislature. Returning alter a 10 years’ absence, he said he had noticed that there had been a good deal said about the Oil per pound duty placed on New Zealand butter in Australia. and he could realise that it was a serious thing over here. lie had always advocated reciprocity in trade between the Dominion and the Commonwealth. as they were all under the Union Jack and should seek to help one another as much as possible.
