The bandits used the missionaries ns shield-ers. while soldiers attacked the mission compound. The rescue consequently was delayed. A ransom of 60.000 dollars demanded was not paid. The captives were uninjured. Missionaries are gradually returning to their stations hastily abandoned by consular instructions a year ago. Tn a majority of the districts friendly to the missionaries, work has been allowed to resume, but the frequency of bandit attacks oil missions prevents many returning.
