TUESDAY. FEBRUARY Mtli., 1928. OVERSEER AM LA,N EIL’S REPORT. I have the honour to report upon the progress of works during the month of January, 1928. NORTHERN RIDING. Malfro.v’.s Bridge Protection. Repairs were effected to culverts on Knpiten Track, and fallen trees removed from the track and Kuniara road at Sandy’s Hill. The hardwood timber previously stacked on the site of the old mill at Jlo Ho, was removed to the outer sides of the road reserve to allow the owner of the properly to erect a fence round the area. CENTRAL RIDING, Lake Kanieri Road Widening was not proceeded with, owing to the lorries which were required for metalling being engaged elsewhere. Station Road Extension. The Contractors have made good progress and have completed the clearing, forming, draining, concrete culverts and nine chains of metalling. McArthur Road Metalling. Proposals and draft plans were prepared for the expenditure of this grant which includes the reforming and metalling the first section across the swamp from AN all Road Mahinapua Creek Bridge. 1 lie necessary hardwood piles for the renewal of this structure were delivered per County lorry, from Ho ilo to the bridge site, and the order placed for the supply of inner heart of rinm timber including stringers, decking, bracing. wheel guards, etc. Municipal Crook Bridge. Hardwood piles 2x30 tcet in length were carted from Ho Ho to the bridge site and the necessary hewn, silver pine timber procured Tor the vertical abutment lining. Station Road Culvert. A concrete pipe culvert 18 inches in diameter, and 18 feet in 'length was constructed where a washout occurred on the first completed section of Station road 750 links beyond Max road junction. MAINTENANCE. Ordinary repairs keeping motor worn holes filled were effected by the Roadman to Lower Kokatnhi and Lake Kanieri roads. Lake Kanieri road was dragged from Kakatahi road junction to one mile peg and from Boucher’s Hill to Boucher's Creek bridge; repairs were also eflected to a deep rub on the western slope of Morris’ Hill. Defective decking was replaced on several bridges and culverts in tbe Kokatnhi district. The following roads wore measured to get correct distances between given pointsKanieri to Doughboy road via Wbitcombc road. Ai'tliurstown road from traffic bridge at AAoodstock to Hokitika River railway bridge. Upper Kokatahi road from Graham's Hotel to 4. Meliarry’s. Hokitikn-llau linn and Blue Spur roads from the eastern Borough boundary to Blue Spur creek bridge. SOUTHERN RIDING. Petersen Road Extension. This work is proceeding in a satisfactory manlier practically the whole of the clearing excepting several trees that require grubbing and the northern side drain 24 chains in length being completed. Ducherly Road Construction. The Contractors have made good progress during the fine weather and the whole of the work should be completed by t lie 22nd February. .MAINTENANCE. Tbe Roadman attended to repairs on Petersen, AYniiganui Flat. Bobertson road, and the road leading to T. Cnin’s between Johnny Walker’s creek and the homestead. At Matainui Detour Road was dragged, graded and repaired with gravel ; also dumps placed at intervals along the roadside lor future repairs to worn spots, between AY. Gunn’s and J. Butler’s residences. Okarito road graded and dragged and cleared of gorse and graded from the Forks to Okarito. and several bad spots- gravelled but -the cost ot stripping and cartage of gravel from the Forks is too costly unless a fairly substantial vote was available for expenditure. However the road is greatly improved but there are several short stretches that could not tie graded owing to stumps and large stones preventing tbe blade from working satisfactorily.
MONTH OF JANUARY. RECORD Ob’ AVORK FOR COUNTY LORRIES. No 1 lorry was driven to Wataroa on January 3rd by G. Morris and worked on Detour road from January ■lth till January 12th dragging Detour road on the 4th, sth and 6th, metalling on the 7th, 9th, 10th, lltli and 12th. On 13th went to Okarito road and started grading; 14th the lorry did not work. X. Randall who drove tlie lorry from the 13th went to Hokitika on business on the 14th, but the lorry worked 9 hours per day for 3 days to make up the lost time, 16th, 17th. 18th. 19tli, 20th, 21st, 23rd and 21th, worked nine hours making up tlie time Inst on the 14th. From the 25th to 31st of January the lorry continued grading and metalling Okarito road making tlie total number of days worked. 24 days ; at Matainui and Okarito and one day January 3rd from Kanieri to Matainui; used 175 gallons of petrol, 45 gallons of lubricating oil and 2 of gear oil. No. 2 lorry was under repair three days. January 3rd, 4th and stli. Carted bridge timber and gear to Awatnna on tlie 6th. Telegraph poles from Aralmra Valley to Kanieri, on the 9tli to Matainui grading Detour road, mi the l()tb and lltli gravelling Detour road ; on the 12lli carted the grader tu Forks and remained idle on ihe 13th, C. Morris driver, working on Okarito road. On the lltli the lorry was brought back to Kanieri with the heavy drag and other road plant loaned by the Public AYorks. On the 16th carted timber front Duck Creek bridge to Awatnna for repairs to the stock bridge crossing AYainvea Creek. Front the 17tli to the 23rd the lorry was idle at Kanieri while the driver was finishing his holidays. On the 24th and 25th the lorry was engaged carting piles from Ho Ho to Maliinnpua Creek bridge; 26th metalling Kokatahi road; 27tli delivering pipes from Kanieri to Dorothy Falls road for the Public AYorks. 28th under repair; 30th carting telegraph poles half a day, metalling half a day; 31st carting pipes to Station road and timber for bridge repairs.
