REWARDS FOR LOST PROPERTY. The French Chamber lias passed a bill making it obligatory upon the owner of lost property when recovered to pay the finder the reward of five per cent of the value. This rate is reduced to two per cent on property worth more than 100.000 francs.

MOVING A MOUNTAIN OF SLAG. In connection with the new gasworks which are being erected at Burnley, the L.M.S. Railway Company were asked to move a distance of two and a-lialf miles a dump of about 250,000 tons of slag and colliery dirt from a nearby colliery. For tlie purpose two special trains were brought into action and run on a shuttle service, one train being loaded at one end while the other was being unloaded at the other. The trains were composed of special wagons which enabled the dirt to he tipped from the wagon on the exact spot required.
