THOUGHTS FOR THE TIMES
Tim Jut knkino Bn.r.. This Bill died of ’’pernicious anaemia." A Licensing Rill is badly wanted, but a responsible government must assume responsibility, or become the joke of the gallery. Where are we now ? Paying enormous salaries to Ministers .and Members, and we cannot get a good Licensing Bill on the Statute-book “Tom Jones reieivrd £1 a day to trim a hedge of 109 yards long. He had the cutter and other implements. He worked for twelve weeks. He tried to cut one little twig, but failed. Ho <1 i l l nothing. At the end of twelve weeks bis ‘boss’ generously paid him his wages in full.” What a lucky man Tom .Tones was. Rut what did he do? He never said “Thank you.” but be growled and declared be should have been paid a. much higher wage. Impudent Tom .Tones! “Tom .Tones’’ is our Parliament. They have done nothing; yet they have clamoured for higher pay. —The New Zealander.
