(By Telegraph—Per Proas Association. VALUABLE COLLECTION BURNT. GISBORNE, Fob. 10. This afternoon an eight-roomed residence and its contents, owned by Mr .). K. Kirk, wore completely destroyed by fire. Included in the loss was a valuable library, including volumes going back to the loth, century and autographed works by famous authors, Vail liable pictures, war medals and South Sou Island curios. Insurances on the building were £2(XX.) and on the furniture £IOOO. both in the Standard Office. NAVY TO -MAKE MARINE SURVEY AUCKLAND, Feb. 10. Search is to be made next week for the rock near Gable End Foreland, which the Federal Line steamer Northumberland struck on January 26th. 1927. The. search will be carried out hv the naval vessels, Veronica, Laburnum and Wakaktira. which will leave Auckland to-morrow. Investigation will he commenced at daybreak next Monday and the vessels i will carry out an extensive survey of the sea between Gable End Foreland, Gisborne and the Ariel Bank, the last mentioned being about eight miles off hind. Given fine weather the work is expected to he completed in three days but should had conditions he met with the work may occupy a week. IN POSSESSION OF OPIUM. AUCKLAND, Fob. 10. A 'Chinese laundry-keeper named Hum was lined £25 to-day for "having opium in his possession. The Magistrate declined to believe the statement that the opium came to the laundry in a parcel of washing. -MR FORBES’ CAMPAIGN. WHANG AREI, Fob. 10. .Messrs G. AY. Forbes, ALP. and E. A. Ransom, ALP., addressed a meeting to-night, in the interests of the new United Party. The Coates administration was severely criticised, and the meeting concluded with a vote in favour of the new party. -MURDER CHARGE. CHRISTCHURCH, Fob. 11. In the .Magistrate’s Court to-day, John Duncan, a farmer, was remanded till February 20th on a charge of murdering his two-year-old son. Duncan was arrested oil February Gth when his house and stacks wc.it found blazing. The body of the child was discovered in a crock adjoining the farm. SUDDEN" DEATH. GISBORNE. Feb. 11. The sudden death is reported from Tokomaru Hay. of -Mrs Tom Bates, wife of a well-known settler and member of the "Education Board. She was standing in a backyard talking to her husband when she collapsed and expired.
MAN MISSING. DUNEDIN, Feb. 11. Ronald Stewart Sutherland, a signalman residing at Tniroa Heads, with his wife and two children, was missed from home at mid-night on Thursday. As the result of finding a note in his handwriting the police were communicated with and carried out an unsuccessful search along the foreshore yesterday. Sutherland is a returned soldier, who was recently transferred from lighthouse service to the employment of the Harbour Board. PRICE OF SUGAR. AUCKLAND, February 12. A reduction of ten shillings per ton in prices of all grades of raw and refined sugars, is announced by the Colonial Sugar Co. The reduction takes effect to-morrow. Under the new scale, the wholesale price for No. 1 A sugar (popular table sugar) will he 923 per ton.
