Mental Hospital, regarding water supply.—Received and attended to InClerk. From the Secretary. Brunner Miners and ( oiiihined Schools Picnic Committee. asking for the use of Cass Square on Saturday, the 11th instant.—Received and granted. From Municipal Association of New Zealand, intimating that conference of delegates would he held at Nelson on W ednesday, the I Ith March next, and asking that name of delegate he furnished.— Received. .11 nvor to represent I Council if convenient. From Messrs R. W. Holmes and Son, civil engineers Wellington, intimating that they would undertake the duties ol consulting engineers.—Received. Mr Evans stated the firm was highly recommended. Received and letter filed for future reference. From G. Muir. Ross, application Imposition of Cemetery caretaker.-—Re-ceived. no vacancy. From Conservator of Forests, Hokitika. asking for summary of trees planted during 1927, etc.— Received; Department to lie written to regarding plantation on sea beach. From Inspector of Public Health, notification under Public Health Act re eases of pulmonary tuberculosis.— Received. From the Chairman, No. 12 District Highways Council, intimating that the Main Highways Hoard had no power t : declare certain streets in this borough as secondary highways, and intimating Mr D. J. Evans, the Westland member of the District Council can explain the position to this Council.— Received. Mr Evans explained that in counties, roads other than the direct main highway route were being recommended as secondary ‘highways. He thought the same principle should apply to boroughs. and advised that a map of the town he prepared to indicate when the Highways Hoard visited the district at the end of the month, the actual position regarding the liso of subsidiary streets for highway traffic. The matter was referred to the Mayor. Mr Armstrong, and Town Clerk, to wait on the' Highways Hoard with lull particulars. From Miss Esther Ward, Fitzherbcrt Street, pointing out the danger of tiro through the* over-growth on Borough Reserve adjoining her property. Received and attended to. From Hon. Secretary. Stuart and three others asking that a fire-plug he installed at the corner ol Stalford and .lollio Sts. Received, report of cost to he obtained. Arising out of this matter, the Council authorised the fire-plugs previously promised for Upper Gibson Quay and Rollesion Street. FINANCIAL. The Treasurer reported receipts £283 8s Id ; payments £514 2s 6d credit balance, general account, £5)9 (; s 3d; credit loan account £69 I'.is.— Received and adopted. Accounts to the amount of £514 2s (id were passed lor payment. OVERSEER’S REPORT. I l,eg to report the following works were carried out during the month. Growth was cut in Sale St. between Stalford St. and Gibson Quay, in Web Street between Hrittan and Rolleston ,'treet. and Davie Street between Hampden and l’ark Streets. The culvert in Stafford Street near Caliari’s was taken out and a double line of concrete pipes put in. the size being two feet three inches diameter, and the length being thrity-nine feet, using twenty-six pipes three feet long; and the mad widened. Gravelling was clone in Weld Street in front of the electric power station. Ihe lootpath in Stafford Street in front of Mr Yarrull’s was gravelled, and a lew loads in Livingston St. at Mr Appleton’s. An approach was put in at the Roman Catholic Church, and Mr Yarrall’s approach widened. Tar-sealing was carried out • at tie State School and the Government Buildings. The water connection at the Hokitika “ Guardian ” was cut and a high pressure tap put in. also a water eon- | iiection in Cass Square. Seventy feet of drainage pipes were laid in Hrittan Street at the corner of ! Hampden Street at Mr Hareourt s. On Saturday. 28th Jan., a pipe in the water main at Tucker Hat am. the reservoir ran dry. but when repaired was soon made up. The morgue was painted inside with stalite, and a ladder made for the town clock. . , The water in the reservoir averaged 7ft for the month. __ The report was received, and it was resolved the Overseer report as to ih cost of repairs to the reservoir to avoid the present seapage. abattoirs. The Manager reported stock slaughtered cows 41 ; heifers, 22 ; bullocks, 39; sheep. 252 ; lambs. 11l ; pigs, lo: calves, 5. None condemned. The report of the Reserves ( ommittoe held over from the previous meeting was adopted, occupiers of reserves to ho notified as to terms on which leases would lie granted, and applications to be invited for unlot reserves. The sanitary contract was renewed for a period on the application ot the contractor on terms submitted previously. A motion was carried authorising ten per cent penalty to rates outstanding after the stipulated period ol six months. The Council rose at 9 p.m.
