Enquiry was made at the Borough Council meeting last evening regarding Llll • hi re of Cass Square for side-shows. The Town Clerk said the present ch.-tree was £-‘5 a week lor three weeks, with it deposit of £lO against damage. Mr E. It was reported last evening that the output of tar from the local works, estimated at .1000 gallons had been secured and 1000 gallons of res-mex ordered from Christchurch, for tar-seal-ing purposes. Mr AY. AVinchester lias arrived hole and has taken up the duties of relieving manager of the Hank of New Zealand, during the temporary absence of Air Baker, relieving at Grevmouth.
Air J. \Y. Collins. Secretary to the Department of Commerce and Industries was a visitor to Hokitika yesterday, and on behalf of the Hoard of Trade paid a visit, to the Hokitika Gas Company's works.
Bathers at Grevmouth beach have been having an unpleasant time owing to the presence of large shoals of jelly fish. The moment they come in contact with a bare limb they attach themselves to it. and when the bather removes the jelly lisli it responds by stinging. The re. nit is a painful rash often accompanied by a swelling of the affected part. The beach is strewn with ILs.li washed ashore and left high and dry by the receding tide.
Entries close next Saturday for the competition items in the Jubilee Day procession at Grevmouth on the 28th inst. The events are:—Best display in pro. cssion ; best trades' display ; most orignal display; most humorous ms play; best decorated motor car; best schools' display; best juvenile display. The prizes are gold medals value L'-'t ‘is. There will be a great gathering of Coasters and cx-Coaster.s (as well as many other interested visitors) over the period of the jubilee proceedings.
At the Borough Council meeting last evening Alt' Heenan asked if the special Water Works Committee Intel any report to make. The Mayor explained the Committee was wailing for a report front the Overseer, relative to a new route for the line of pipes, but the report was delayed, owing to pressure of other work. It was resolved to have the report for uoxL meeting. AH' Heinz, while in Christchurch next week was asked to report as to the cost of pipes in use in and about ( liristeliurcli for water supply purposes.
The Borough Council is taking steps to give occupiers of reserves a better title—with a e orresi.milling increase in rentals. At the meeting of the Council last evening a report was adopted from the Deserves (ommitlee embody mg the proposals. The matter had been examined exhaustively by the Acting Town ( ierli. and present occupiers can ascertain the- procedure necessary under which if they so desire. a more satisfactory title may he obtained. AH \Y. R. Morris, of Morris Motors, arrived at Wellington on Wednesday. after a I ICO miles' tour of the North Island. He says that they did the whole distance' in a 15.9 lap. open tourer, and found the roads much better than they had expected. "One could hardly expect to find the roads better,’' lie said, "but of course there is naturally room for great improvement in certain districts. 1 did not li till the necessity for a high-powered engine, for the smaller high-efficiency engine did all that was necessary, and it is much more economical to run. I I eel quite certain that we shall, in the near future, see a large changeover from American to British cars. He repeated his iornter statement that lie was iimly convinced that the British workman was the best in the world, and lie saw no reason, therefore, why they should not eventually get ii very large share of New Zealand business.

The Brunner District Annual Excursion to Hokitika recurred again to-day, and was attended bv a large number of old and young, dbe rain overnight cooled the air and made conditions not uncomfortable. The visitors were accommodated on Cass Square, as usual, where everything was in readiness for the visitors and ample shelter provided.
The death occurred suddenly yesterday of Airs Alarion Aland Hagen, wife of Air Oscar Hagen, of Xgaherc railway section, at the residence of her sister. Airs T. \Yillis. Collins St., Blaketown. She liad been ailing for some time, and her death was not altogether unexpected. The deceased, who was ;t native of Ross, leaves three daughters. Olga, Aileett and Hilda Hagen, and one son.
