(By Telegraph—Per Press Association.) PROTECTING THE’ PUBLIC. CHRISTCHURCH, Feb. 9. In the Magistrate’s Court, Edward Hehnsley Dawson, for the theft of a motor cycle, was sentenced to twelve months. The Senior-Sergeant said tile accused had just done six months for the theft of the same bicycle earlier. Magistrate Mosley said it was impossible to allow probation. The public must be protected from such thefts. DEATH OF A SWAGGER, NEAV PLYMOCTH, Feb. 9. A man, about 00 years of age. was found dead on the Junction Road, just about the llorough boundary, at eight o’clock this morning. There were no marks on the body to suggest the cause ol death. Among the effects there are some papers with the name ol G. Hughes, which showed lie 1 elonged to the Wellington Car fie liters’ and General .Labourers’ Fnion, and the New Zealand Labour Party. A swag was found on the roadside one hundred yards from the body.

Harry Osman. 15. pleaded guilty to bigamy at the Police Court and was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence.
On Jan. 1911 ho married Margaret Jones Graham at Auckland, and on October last, being still married he went through the form <>T marriage with ivy Lillian Pates at Papakura. Accused stated that seven years ago his wile obtained a separation order against him and then three years ago she had been admitted to the Auckland Mental Hospital Hi, second wifo was 17 years of age. A NAPIER BLAZE. NAPIER, Eel,. 9. An excellent save was effected by the brigade in a lire in a two-storeyed wooden building in Hastings St. late last night. The Brigade quenched the blaze in excellent time so that, only the rear portion was seriously affected. The building was jointly occupied by .Mr Ken Evans, photographer; Duncan Lee. laundry, and Savoy Cafe. Fume of the occupiers were rescued hv the Brigade from the front verandah. The building is owned by the AVliite Swan Brewery Coy., and is insured in uie Phoenix Office for £BOO. Maori boy drowned. GISBORNE. Fel,. 9. A Maori hoy. Mori Tiki Taui. was drowned in a small lake at Tepuia hot springs. The buy has been missing since Sunday. The body was found yesterday by two of the hospital stall'. CHEQEE FRA EDS. TIMA RE, Feb. 9. At the Supremo Court. Henry Eno Vercoo. on three charges of obtaining money by false pretences by means of valueless cheques, was sentenced to six months imprisonment.

Mr Lamb ami family lost everything, and escaped in their night attire. The station books and doeuiiTcnts were saved. Business is being carried on in the goods shed.
