Yesterday marked the record railage .f fat lambs from the West Coast to Addington, the tally being 78 double decker trucks containing 1(100 lambs. The transport was carried out during llie day. the last train of 35 trucks leaving Greymouth at 1 .do p.tn. for Canterbury. The trains were dispatched at periods to allow for the disposal of the contents of one train before the arrival of the next at the drafting yards in Addington. 'Two trucks (double deckers) of handy sized bacon pigs were also sent forward to Addington.

The death of ’Mr John Baird Hobart, at one time manager of the Bank of New Zealand, Hokitika, occurred at \uoklaud last Tuesday at the age of (iS years. He arrived in New Zealand from Ireland in 1878 under the Katikati settlement scheme. The project being unsuccessful, he entered the service of the Bank of New Zealand, wfiore he remained thirty years. The departure this month of Mr W. Craw, stationmaster. under transfer, while a matter for congratulation so far as the officer’s advancement in the service is concerned, will lie regretted h.v those who had business with the officer. Mr Craw has proved a painstaking and interested officer in his work, and was always careful to see that clients of the Department had 'the best possible service. The Oreymouth Harbour Board last evening opened the tenders received for the supply of an electric suction dredge for the port. .In view of thoil technical intricacies, the Hoard resolved. on the Chairman's motion, to refer the tenders to the ’Engineer for a recommendation as to tlie* most favourable one for acceptance. They will he forwarded to the Kngincer-jn-Chicf, in.order to secure such recommendation. One firm which bad received the specifications advised that it. had altered its decision and was not tendering. The following were the tenderers: Dispatch Foundn Company. Oreymouth. £9952 for the dredge complete; J. Niven and Coy. £9558 for the dredge complete with pontoon, and £0571 for the machinery only; Richardson and Cave. £0022 for the machinery alone; Parkinson and Coy (England and Dunedin) £4744 for the machinery alone, without compressed air. and £7709 toF the dredge complete.

Ap. H. A. Wntkinson. District Engineer. who has been Chairman X». 12 Highways Council, is leaving (’revmouth to-morrow for his new post at Tauranga. Mr Wntkinson is not being allowed to leave without some recognition and appreciation from the County members of the Highways Council, over whom he has presided since being appointed to the No. 12 Highways District. The County members of the Council have combined, and asked Mr J. Higgins, the resident member at Oreymouth. to present Mr Wntkinson, on their behalf, with some volumes of reference works for his personal library, as a mark of the esteem in which he was held by bis fellow members of the Council.
