QUEEN INDISPOSED. r,ON DON. Feb. (>. Oflieial.—Owing to the Queen’s told, it is considered inadvisable for her to attend the opening of Parliament tomorrow. TUB AGED ARCHBISHOP. LONDON. Feb. 0. The Archbishop of Canterbury is presiding at a critical session of the Church Assembly reconsidering the Prayer Book. He was widely congratulated to-day on the completion of a quarter of a century’s Primateship, which is a four hundred years record. He reaches his 8(Hli birthday on the 7th April, and his golden wedding on the 12th of November. The Archbishop said the House of Bishops introduced the amended measure believing it the embodiment ot all considerations. He submitted it to three Houses of the Assembly, as an endeavour to meet the desires of all groups. The House of Bishops would cheerfully consider any aiiK-mlmo- “ from the Houses of Clergy and Laity. He hoped no ill-considered word would strengthen those who because the skein is tangled, would ruthlessly cut out something characteristic of Fngland’s life tolling throughout the cen‘furies for the public spirit, the reverence for the truth.
TROUBLE IN GREECE. ATHENS, Feb. fi. There are excited demonstrations at Crete against the Creek Government, and these culminated in a demand for a reduction in taxation, otherwise the Cretans would organise a revolution against the Creek regime. This threat will increase the difficulty of forming a new Cabinet. ANOTHER FLY IN THE BUTTER TRADE. (Received this day at 1.5 p.tn.) LONDON, Feb. (!. Commenting on the use of preservatives in butter, the newspaper “ Grocer,” says the full effects of the prohibition of preservet i vos will not be felt in the Colonics till next season, owing to the large quantities sold hv factories at the beginning of the season on c.i.f. terms. But purchasers are suffering enormous losses, especially upon the best 11 Kangaroo ” brand and butter from factories which iormerly turned out the best quality in England have to rely on imported Imttcr, hut naturally desires to give preference to products of our own colonies. 'I hose rapidly deteriorate after they arc removed from cold storage. Deterioration is only preventiblc by the use of preservatives, so we shall evidently have to rely more and more on Continental countries, who will reap a glorious harvest, at the colonics’ expense. WOOL PRICES. LONDON. Feh. fi. Bradford quotations arc firm all round. .Merinos are quieter, and for crossbreds there is a good demand.
