GENERAL CABLES.
EXTENDING RESEARCH OPERATIONS. (Australian Press Association A Sun.) (Received this day at 9.30 a.m). LONDON, Eel). 5. Following the steady progress in linking up the research organisations in Britain with those in the Dominions and India, the Medical Research Council last year extended the process to the colonies, protectorates and mandated territories. It is hoped the result will he a veritable Imperial reserach service. Commenting on the subject the Council in the annual report points out there is probably more tuberculosis and measles in the tropics than in England, and those diseases may perhaps be better studied overseas than at Home, just as the control of purely tropical diseases may spring from clues discovered "'*sn some northern laboratory. It becomes clearer every year that medical science is one and indivisible, whether I in temperate or tropical climates, consequently the research should be done wherever the best opportunity offers. In response to a request from the Empire Marketign Hoard, which is financing the work for five years,, the Council has arranged a comprehensive investigation under the general direction of Professor Harden, of Lister Institute, into the vitamin contents of fruit, vegetables and dairy products, and the effects of the different methods of preservation and transport of these foods. The Council lengthily reviews .the progress towards artificial vitamin •'reduction, and points out the national needs of vitamin can be met from liver fat, utilised with butter and margarine, and in other ways the Home supply can readily be supplemented, if necessary, from Empire produce. It lias been found the vitamin content of fat lrom imported New Zealand liver is the sanu> as from liver of the Home killed animals. SOUND ADVICE. ROME, Feb. 5. Mussolini has issued a decree ordering Fascists living abroad to observe the laws of the countries where they are living. People at Matlock mountain resort, in Derbyshire, are requesting other spas to co-operate in a petition to the authorities to forbid broadcasting for one month to test its effect on. the weather. There is a growing conviction at the many health resorts that the phenomenally rainy weather for the past thirteen months is due to wireless. It is pointed out that many mornings are fine, anil that rain frequently begins with the wireless programmes, and gets worse in the afternoon and evening as broadcasting increases.
