By Telegraph—Press Assn., Copyright. A CANADIAN PROTEST. (Received this day at 8.50 a.m.) OTTAWA, Feb. fi. Criticising the Australian Treaty in the House. Mr John Kvans (Progressive member for Rolstown) said it was the height of folly whether it were, done by a statesman or a lunatic, to increase the burden on the people by a trade treaty with Australia. The pact was negotiated by the present Government in tbe interests of a small class of Canadian manufacturers to the detriment of tli«' consuming public. He made a general attack on the principle of tariffs, calling for protection as an economic policy designed for the advantage of a single class. Last session Parliament was a rich man’s least, trade treaties were part of the good game of class privilege. The work of tin- Tariff Advisory Board showed the litter absurdity of maintaining the tariff on necessaries of life and implements of production.
CANADIAN SENSATION. OTTAWA, Feh. 3
Sensational disclosures are likely to result from the Parliamentary investigation promised by the Premier into certain phases of the immigration problem. It is common knowledge that members of Parliament have been using the permit system to get certain persons into Canada, but the system never contemplated their making considerable money by this means. There are persistent reports that a few members and some outside persons received .substantial revenue by procuring permits to admit foreigners at so much per head.
liven more serious are credible stories of “ permit bootleggers ” or persons who manufacture bogus permits, and distribute them to the financial advantage of themselves. .Mr Korke (Minister of Immigration) knows of the existence of such an industry and mounted police, are on the track.
