For the first time for many years, United States Steel lias reported a deficit of 4,693,499 dollars for the fourth quarter of 1927, after payment of its common stock dividend, as compared with a surplus of 15.950,470 dollars in the fourth quarter of the previous year when regular dividends were declared. Jan. 31. The Shipping Board has deferred action on Commissioner Teller’s proposal to end Swnyne Hoyt’s operation of the American-Australian Orient line, cabled on 17th January. Tt is believed the Board will continue Swayne Hoyt’s contract until the line is sold. Bids for purchase will he opened here on 10th February.

Jan. 31. It has been officially established that the wreck of the train on which Mi Cosgrave was travelling was due ton team of horses drawing a heavy 'n ging sleigh, bolting from the loading station. The sleigh runner jammed m and wedged the switch open and the train went through and becom derailed.
