Rear-Admiral Bruinsy reported to the Navy Department that submarine S 3 became separated from the other submarines of the Control Force on 2Sth January, one hundred miles olf Cape Hattcras, since when no communications have been received. Officials of the Department emphasise that this is not unusual during hud weather conditions, and at present there is no cause for anxiety.
CANADIAN TRAIN ACCIDENT
MR COSGROVE ABOARD.

The train bringing Ur Cosgrove to Ottawa from Philadelphia was derailed at Limoges. Mr Cosgrove and party were uninjured, hut one member ol the Irani crew was killed and several injured. It, is believed the engine of the train ran into an open switch. Officials of the Canadian National Railway sent a special train to bring .Mr C’osgrnve thirty miles to Ottawa. Reports that the disaster constituted an attempt on Mr Cosgrove’s life caused secret service officers to rush mounted police to the scene of the disaster. They were under orders to make complete investigations in order to determine whether someone had tampered with the switch.

Moffett, who ievised the figures, told the naval committee that 1490 new aeroplanes, costing over eighty-eight million dollars with maintenance. would he necessary tor the new aireralt caiI’iers and cruisers. He declared the icvisod figure was made necessary hv the replacements required in the next few years. Many obsolete planes would go out of service shortly and new aeroplanes would be built in seven years, beginning 1930, and would necessitate the total of 2.930 aviation officers and personnel. •
