[Field-Marshal Earl Haig 0.M., K.T., G.C.IL. G.C.Y.0., Bemersyde, St. Boswells, Roxburghshire, aged (id; Com-maudor-in-Chiel ol the British Forces in France 1915-1918, after being in command of one ol the corps ot the Expeditionary Force in France; Com-niaiidci-iu-Ciiiet, Aldershot; lias seen service in Soudan, 1898; South Africa, 1899-1902; Inspector-General Cavalry in India, 1903-6; Director Military Training. 10()(> # ; Director Staff Duties at Headquarters, 1907-9 : Chief ot Staff, India, 1909-11. Won high fame for many acts of leadership m the war. and’received G.C.B. as Birthday honour. Succeeded Viscount French in chief (oniniand of British Forces in France, Dec.. 1915. Made Field-Mar-shal on January 1, 1917, and Knight ot the Thistle in July. A son and heir was horn to Sir Douglas in March, 1918. to whom the King was godfather. Received the Military Medal from France after the brilliant advance in V moist 1918. Commander-in-Cllief of the" Forces ill Great Britain for some months in 1919. Accorded a fine welcome on driving through London. Received tiie Order of Merit and an earldom. with a grant of €11)0.000, in 1919. He exerted himself on bchall ol officers and ex-service men.]
