The evening train from Hokitika yesterday met with a mishap near Parna. two wheels of the locomotive leaving the rails as a result of a collision with a cow. The train sustained no damage, and was delayed only about twenty minutes.

A car driven by Mr A. Eadie, of Bell Hill, collided at the corner of Tainui and Murray Streets, Groymoutli, last evening, with a car driven by .Mr F. Harley (Groymoutli), the latter vehicle receiving minor damages. It appears that Mr Eadie’s car was following that of Mr Harley, and when the latter turned at the Murray Street corner, the former vehicle struck the other car at the rear. The spare wheel and mudguards sustained the force of the impact, only slight damage being done to the body of the car. Mr Eadie’s car was apparently none the worse for the accident.

The announcement is made that the Hon John Barr. Christchurch, whose term as a Legislative Councillor expired on Jan. 22. was reappointed next day for a term of seven years. Other Councillors whose term expires this year are: Colonel Collins ('Wellington), July 14; the Hon John MacGregor (o|tago), July 14; the Hon William H. Messrs J. Steel and A. Parker, of the engineering staffs of the I’aparoa and Blackball coal mines respectively, who spent the week-end on an exploring expedition in the Paparoa ranges, report ithat keas are very plentiful in the Paparoas. They also returned with some fine specimens of quartz from the lode of the old Croesus mine, which was abandoned some twenty years ago. Messrs Steel and Parker spent a good ideal of time in prospecting the country in the vicinity of the Croesus mine, the results of their investigations being considered very satisfactory.

The Greymouth watersiders annual picnic train arrived from Greymouth this morning about 10.30. There was a large crowd on hoard the train. Cass Square was made the location, where a regular gala carnival is taking place this afternoon, a fine sports programme having been arranged.
