AUCKLAND, Jan. 24. .More reciprocity in the trading relations of New Zealand and Australia is what tile Hon Walter Dennett, M.L.A., considers business men in both countries should strive to achieve. Mr Bennett has been Minister of Public Works and 3l.ini.stcr of Forestry under two Administrations in his State. Incidentally he is a New Zealander, owning Wellington as his birthplace. Detectives raided the Central Hotel, I.amhton Quay, this morning, and arrested three men : Vincent Eric Reeve, motorman aged 30 years; Horace Haycock, barman anil upholsterer, aged 28 years; and Bernard Sullivan, barman, aged 33 vein's. This afternoon the three men appeared in the Magistrate’s Court before Mr F. Page, S.M., to answer charges against the gaining laws. Reeve and Haycock pleaded guilty to carrying on the business of bookmakers, and Sullivan pleaded guilty t > keeping and using the public liar of the Central Hotel as a common gaming house. Reeves was lined £3O. and Haycock and Sullivan were each fined £2O. Fourteen days were allowed in which t ) pay the fine in default one month's imprisonment in each case.

At the Magistrate’s Court this morning, before Mr H. W. Bundle, SM.. William Fraser, run-holder, at Hakataramea appeared on a charge of being in charge of a ear while intoxicated. The Magistrate after hearing lengthy evidence, said lie was satisfied defendant and his companion, Hugh Wilson had indulged in a drinking bout on the day previous. Defendant had stayed out the night, though less Ulan two miles from Kucow, while j A ilson had refused to give any ac- ■ count of his whereabouts during the 1 night, though lie admitted that at j •>•3O in the morning lie was reading a newspaper at the Monument. j Defendant was fined £8 and his li- I cense cancelled for two years.
