THE HICKMAN TRIAL. (Received this day at 10.15 a.mA ■ NEW YORK, Jan. 25. At Los Angeles thousands endeavoured to gain admission at the opening of the Hickman trial. Hickman, haggard and cringing, pleaded insanity. His counsel objected to trial by the judge on the grounds of prejudice, after which the judge held a recess court for the purpose of deciding whether to continue the trial.
PREMIER ILL. OTTAWA, Jan. 25. A message from Winnipeg states grave anxiety is felt over the serious condition of Premier Brocken, of Manitoba, who is suffering from intestinal troubles. An operation is suggested. TERRIFIC WIND STORM. NEW YORK, Jan. 25. Violent wind storms throughout western. United States killed ten and injured many. The damage to property at present is inestimable. The gale reached a velocity of seventy miles an hour. Pedestrians in New York City fought their way to the subway in thfe elevated stations against the winds that made walking arduous. The waters in the harbour were churned by the gale, swamping two boats at the dock. Many injuries were caused when persons were unable, through the lorce ot the wind, to dodge automobiles.
