TASMAN FLIGHT
[By Telegraph, Per Press Association.] TLHEATED. AO-TE-AROA. ROYAL COMMISSION ADYOCATED. WELLINGTON, Jan. 24. A cablegram has been received from Melbourne stating that the “Argus” in an editorial urges the appointment of a Uoval Commission representing Australia and New Zealand to investigate the flight of the missing aviators. Moncrieff and Hood. fund fob dependents. WELLINGTON. Jan. 24. To-night a. representative public meeting in the Council Chamber authorised the Mayor (Mr O. A. Troup) to open a fund to provide for the dependants of Captain Hood and Lieutenant Moncrieff. who met an unknown fate when attempting to fly across the Tasman Sea from Sydney to Wellington a fortnight ago. The Mayor, Sir Harold Beauchamp and Mr P. Blundell were appointed trustees. FLYING THE TASMAN. .MOODY’S ATTEMPT. MELBOURNE. Jan. 24. Although the Commonwealth Government refused to aid Moody and Jolley, the Government has no power to stop the flight. Limited by the Constitution it has only power to deal with interstate and foreign matters connected with flying, and even these regulations are indefinite. Major Do Haviland, referring to his cable to Bailey, said it was his principle not to supply machines which he thought were not absolutely safe for work he had to do. What was the good of flying the Tasman! Anyone knew an aeroplane could cross the Tasman with a certain amount of luck, hut that would not prove anything from an aviation point of view. From a commercial aspect, it would he necessary to use a big machine which would prove costly.
