Sutcliffe was beaten soon after the start by a supeib length olf break, when be seemed well set? Holmes and Tyldesley were unperturbed by the fast bowlers, but Nupen was dangerous. Holmes bad a bright bit. but the innings was marred by three chances. Alter a restrained opening in face of the dangerous howling of Nupen and A ineent, Hammond and Tyldesley played Ireely all round, despite many changes ol howling. Ihe partnership put on 127 for the third wicket. Tyldesley's defence was sound, but lie did not neglect to score whenever the opportunity offered. Hammond gave a masterly display. He hil one six and seven fours. Stumps were then drawn.
