AMUSEMENTS.

EVERYBODYS PICTURES. “BARDELY’S THE MAGNIFICENT” TO-NIGHT. Burning eyes, a sword that Hashed like a shaft of light, a mocking smile that changed to one of tenderness, an agile body that performed miracles of daring athletic*. . it is this impression that one remembers of John Gilbert after seeing “Bnrdely's, the Magnificent” at the Princess Theatre tonight. The picture is the screen version of Bafaol Snbntini's popular novel, and may be placed in the same category c/f colourful fascination as “The Sea Hawk” and “Searatnouehe'’ which were also written by this famous author. The part of Bardelys, portrayed by Gilbert, is a source, of never ending delight. Lover, lighter, braggart. boaster, ho is still a likeable and indeed fascinating figure. He is probably the most intriguing of all the creations of Sabitini’s vivid imagination. Breaking hearts with the same gay irresponsibility and recklessness that his every action betrayed, his wild wager to wed “the coldest lady in France” is made the substance of the story. “The- Big Parade” gave Gilbert a world-reputation as a great dramatic star. “Bardelys” not only sustains that reputation, hut reveals him in many new aspects. He is an astonishing versatile young man. possessing not only a. classic handsomeness, hut geuuino acting ability and

really remarkable athletic attainments. His sword-play is a revelation ; his horse-hack feats unusually convincing; while his nonchalant leaping from house-tops, over fences and impossible barricades, his airy swinging from building to building on fragile ropes and tremendous curtains are. calculated to give spectators an honest thrill. Eleanor Bonrdmnn as the fair Lady Roxalanne, is a splendid choice. This actress has a very engaging personality, graceful beauty and a definite poise that enables her to invest her role with the desirable attributes of dignity and impressiveness. Her love scenes with Mr Gilbert are particularly striking. The remainder of the well-balanced east includes George TC. Arthur. Roy D’Arcy. Lionel Belmore, Karl-Dane. Arthur Lukin, and many others. A Topical and Comedy will he included in to-night’s grand display. S|>ecial prices will be charged, viz: Circle ‘2s, stalls Is 6d, children under 12 as usual.
