Tim value of Cass Square to the town of Hokitika we should say is inestimable The large picnic gathering there last Friday is to be followed by three other large picnics from a distance in rapid succession. Surely the town is being well repaid for the rare and attention devoted to the maintenance of the Square. Tt is a very pleasing sight to see the visitors disporting themselves in such numbers on Cass Square. The locution is an ideal one. The special and peculiar value of the tree plantation surroun<T7ng the grounds is fully demonstrated on such occasions. Probably no oilier town oil the Coast enn provide so fine a picnic resort. The asset therefore is an outstanding one' Tt was a wise provision to provide building accommodation for shelter on special occasions, but the provision of hot, water supplies is a particular boon. The well-kept appoarance of the buildings was remarked upon by many of the visitors who seemed to feel that the right civic spirit was abroad in properly earing for the grounds and catering for the special wants of the. people. The regular cutting of the grass bv the Borough Council is another contributing factor to the generally excellent appearance of tile grounds which are altogether creditable to all concerned. In that connection mention must lc made of the good work done by the Beautifying Society, which lias cooperated in a very practical way with the Council. The Society has further schemes in hand to render additional assistance, and in view of the excellent results shown in the past, there should he continued readiness on the part of the public to hack up> the Society with additional sinews of war. For the large gathering now congregating on the Square, more public conveniences should he provided. This is perhaps outside the scope of I lie Beautifying Society, and the Council might lake charge of this utility aspect. Additional seating would he a boon also. The fuel that the Municipal Band is making periodical appearances to discourse music, specially suggests the extra seating so that it will not he necessary for the audience to rest, mainly on damp earth. II appeals to us the Square is so much appreciated by our own folk as well as the visitors, that the Borough Council would he justified in ear-marking a •pceial sum year by year to carry out utility improvements. In that respect the children should not he overlooked and more might be done for them with an improved playground.
