N.Z. CHAMPIONSHIPS

DUNEDIN, ■lan. 22. The New Zealand Swimming and Diving Championships commenced at the Municipal Baths on Saturday afternoon. There was a lair attendance of public during the day. but it was not until the evening that ihe public became really enthusiastic. Only heats were swum in the afternoon. the finals being reserved till the evening, when three New Zealand records were broken. In the 100 yards men’s National Championship, liowse.lt of Manganui. lowered the record by 1 3-5 seconds, covering the distance in 50 3-5 seconds. After six lengths hail been covered there was little doubt as to who would be the winner of the mile. Lindsay (Canterbury) covering each successive lap with a long powerful action that gained him an increasing advantage as lap tollowcd lap. AleLean, the Otago man, struggled gamely throughout the race to decrease the distance between himself and the winner, hut without any marked effect. Over the first 12 laps,, there was little between him and Stokes of Canterbury, but a subsequent burst by Stokes, carried him well in front, and the Otago swimmer was unable to 'decrease the distance bqtweeu tliern- 1. in cl say finished up about 60 yards in front of the second man. and was swimming strongly. He received an ovation as he left the water. B. Gallate of Wellington, clipped 4.5 second from the previous record held by Batchelor of Canterbury by winning the ICO yards Junior Boys’ New Zealand Championship m the fast time of 00 1-5 seconds. W. Cameron (Wellington) won the 220 yards Intermediate Boys’ Championship in the excellent time ol 2.45 1-5, which represents the lowering of the previous record by , seconds. Records were lowered on 10 occasions but only four were established The four were: the 100 yards, the 220 yards Boys’ Intermediate, the 100 yards Junior Bovs and 100 yards ladies. Kathleen Miller (Otago) put up a great fight against Ena Stockley (Auckland), the latter knocking 4-o of a second off the existing freshwater be borne in mind that these are only fresh water records.
