The Commissioner of Taxes draws attention of taxpayers to the notification appearing in to-day’s issue that the due date of payment of the Tn-eome-tax is on Thursday, the 9th. day if February, 1928. The demands will he posted from the office of the Commissioner of Taxes on or about 31st. January, 1928. Demands must lie presented with all payments, and if a demand has not been received the Commissioner should he communicated ■with.

The remarkable sagacity of dogs is illustrated by a setter and a spaniel owned by a AA’est Lyttelton resident,. A Lyttelton police official occasionally borrows the dogs for shooting expeditions. He is the owner of an ordinary model Ford ear. and now, every time he passes through AA’ent Lyttelton, the dogs come down to the road and attempt to clamber on to the running board. Although they were kept out of sight, but in the hearing of the main road, and although scores of Fords pass the locality daily, flic dogs never make a mistake, and the official cannot pass in his car without having to contend with the dogs.

Particulars of the hush fires raging in. the .Murchison district state that 38 tents and a cook-house were destroyed at Top House. The death is recorded of Mrs Tavondale, an old identity of Waimangnroa, at the residence of her daughter. Mrs Brittain, of Wellington.

The death occurred yesterday of probably the oldest resident of the Inangahua district, in the persons of Mr Brian McMahon, the well known settler of the Inangahna Valley, who had reached an age within three years of the century.

The Soldiers’ Hall will present a very animated scene this day fortnight when St. .Mary’s Summer Flower Show takes plaee. Everything points to the Show being a pronounced success, and as it is the first Summer Show to he held here for years it should prove a great attraction. In addition to the Show there will ho a cake, sweet and produce stall and tea rooms, so patrons arc assured of first class attention.

A new and up-to-date Hostel has just been completed for the Groymouth Technical High School. It stands on an ideal site and commends a- fine view of the mountains and the Tasman Sea. The Hostel is in two wings, one providing accommodation of hoys and the other for girls. The building is beautifully panelled throughout in New Zealand woods. As the school is one

of the newer type providing for every phase of post-primary -instruction in professional, commercial, trade and domestic science courses, the hostel should prove.particularly attractive to the residents of the country districts, for the varied facilities of the school enable every type of pupil to he catered for. The fact that the extremely low rate of LI 3 per term is being charged for full hoarders should be an added recommendation.

The distinction made by the Kairanga County Council between sheep and cattle dogs and those used for other purposes drew a rather novel protest from a Bunnythorpe resident, who wrote to the council protesting against being forced to pay 10s (Id dog' tax on a fox terrier while owners of Sheep and cattle dogs paid only 2s (Id a head lor their animals. The billowing is an extract from the letter; “I am a man on the land and am seeking to make my living therefrom, hot, not being a dairy farmer. I have no need of a cattle dog; nevertheless, I have a very great need for a (log to keep down such pests as rabbits, rats. mice, birds, etc., etc., so am compelled to keep a fox terrier. . .
