(Received this day at 1 1.1.1 a.m.) SHANGHAI, Jan. 18. -Messages received state the latest news from Chinese waters show a desperate fight was staged by the crew of the steamer San Namhoi, who drove invaders into the sea. The vessel, of seven hundred tons, was proceeding from Eoiiginoon to Kami link, and when fifteen minutes from Konginoon. pirates aboard as passengers appeared with rifles, tiring on the bridge. Braving a fusillade of shots from the pirates, the Chief Engineer Haugliton succeeded in closing the iron grills and the armoured door. Whilst Captain Sparkcs eentinuseil to navigate the vessel Houghton defended the bridge against thirty pirates for twenty minutes, tiring through loopholes, whilst others were defending the after part of the ship. The dclcucc resulted in the pirates abandoning tbe attempt, and jumping into the sea. where they were picked up by sampans. A number were arrested on reaching the shore. Alter their flight it was discovered that Conway was killed and also two Indians, who were defending tile after part of the ship. Several others were wounded. Eleven pirates were killed.
