Several houses in Haining Street, m which it was suspected Pak-a-poo tickets* were being sold, were raided by the police yesterday. 'Pen Chinese and seven Europeans appeared in Court to-day to answer charges of keeping common gaining houses or being found on such prem-

ises. Six of the Chinese pleaded guilty to keeping premises for the sale of pak-a-poo tickets, and wore each lined £lO, in default one month’s imprisonment. Lo Kuin. however, who had three previous convictions, was lined £SO, in default three months’ imprisonment. Six Europeans were each lined £2 on admitting having l>cen on gaming ptomisos illegally, bul Frederick Williams, aged 61. who chose to go into the witness box. was lined £5. An inquest was held into the circumstances connected with the death of Leslie Spencer, motor cyclist, who was killed in a collision with a car driven by Arthur Raymond Gilford, at the Five Cross Roads Claudslands. recently.

After tho hearing of evidence, Coroner Wyvern Wilson, 5.. M., returned a verdict that Spencer’s death was the result of a collision, and that at the time Gifford was travelling at an excessive speed, on the wrong side of the road. Gifford was then charged with negligent driving, and thereby causing the death of Spencer. Accused was remanded on hail at L'lOO. AIAGISTR ATE’S REBUKE. It was stated by the police that Cody had been four times before the Court last year for fraud and theft, and as an idle and disorderly person. WOMAN’S TRAGIC END. HAMILTON, Jan. If!.

An inquest was held to-day into the circumstances connected with the death of Ethel Kennedy Roehford, 39, married, who died shortly after admission to the Waikato Hospital on December 31st. Evidence was given by Dr Fulton that, in response to a message from a neighbour, he went to Airs Roehford, who said her condition had been brought on by herself, consequent on happenings a few months before, while she was in Brown's Hay on holiday. Dr Fulton said that he had conducted a post-mortem on the body. Death, in his opinion, was due to the use of some strong irritant which caused shock and a gradual failing of the heart’s action, and congestion of the lungs. It was impossible to say whether an instrument had been used. Certainly, in his opinion, some stronger solution than alum had been used. The doctor expressed the opinion that the irritant had not been self-applied. The Coroner returned a verdict in accordance with Dr Fulton’s evidence, that death was due to the use oT some irritant, causing shock and a gradual failure of the heart’s action, and congestion of the lungs. STRONG SAVTAIMER DROWNED. INVERCARGILL. Jan. 16. 1 While bathing in the Mnkarewn ! river on Sunday afternoon. Harry Reynolds, 22, residing at North Alnkarewa, 1 was drowned. He was a strong swimmer. and it is presumed that he had an attack of cramp.
