On Saturday an inquest was held at Greymoutli by Mr \V. Mehlrum. Coroner, as to the drowning of the child. Mary O’Connor, aged three and ahalf years, in the Lagoon on Friday afternoon, near Preston Road. Mrs Mary J. O’Connor stated the deceased was missed at -1 p.m. prior to which she had been playing with other children. around the house, but witness did not see her go near the Lagoon. Mr Herbert Leach said that, at 5. Id p.m. lie found the child’s body fifteen yards from the fence on the mud flat after the tide had gone out. There would be only foot of water there when it was in. Though working nearby. he had not heard any cry from the child. The Coroner returned a verdict of accidental drowning. That the export of fresh whitebait from this district represents a substantial industry, is indicated by an enquiry made by the Westland Acclimatisation Society as to the quantity railed to Christchurch. The information supplied is to the effect that the railways carried over thirty tons of fresh whitebait from Westland County (Ross. Hokitika, Kumara, and flag stations) during last season, representing some 2,373 packages. From Grcymouth and llag stations 207 packages were railed representing over eight tons**of fresh fish, though no doubt some of the fish went from the Teremakau river and half should he credited to Westland. The total fish railed was upwards of forty tons, being in actual weight o‘s tons Ljcwt, and in all 0.010 packages of fish. Tn addition of course there were the fish supplies for the local canning and that used in local consumption. which would more than double the quantity given above. Racing at Riccarlon and Trentham is without doubt less of a pure gamble than anywhere else in the Dominion. There is no shadow of doubt that any racegoer can bet with more confidence at the courses named than at any other. The size and lay-out are the main reasons for such confidence, for both courses, with their long straights, back and front, and great width, give horses every chance. Then there is another point that improves them and gives them a further advantage. Both have a false rail, and horses who are in behind the leaders at the turn do not lose winning chances by being blocked in the run home. The false rail may not be generally approved, writes “Vedette,” but from what is seen round the many meetings, the false rail would lie a decided improvement if it were generally adopted. Tn connection with the foregoing it litis been suggested to introduce the false rail at the turns into and out of the straight on the Hokitika racecourse, and the Secretary, who will be visiting Trentham shortly is to look into the matter with a view to reporting to the local Club.
