(By Telegraph—Per Press Association. STOLEN AIEAT. HAAIILTON, Jan. 13. Twelve months’ imprisonment was the sentence imposed on a young man named Joseph Ellworthy Owen, at Hamilton, today, for the theft of three bottles of soft drinks valued at Is Gd. and 2s worth of meat.
Accused’s record was not a good one. 'l’he police stated that recently he had been living by burgling meat safes and sleeping on the river hank. WARNING AIOTORISTS. WELLINGTON. Jan. 13. Allegations by tile Police that one named Valentine had been warning motorists that they were running into a police trap, resulted in Valentino lieing charged at the Court to-day with attempting to obstruct a constable in the execution of his duty. Air Putnam, for Valentine, said that the Court was being asked to say that if a man was about to eomniit'Ji crime an attempt to stop him, was an offence against the Police.
He refused to dismiss the case ns trival, hut said if Afr Putnam wished to look into the legal authorities, lie would give him time. The ease was adjourned till Tuesday.
.Magistrate Page replied that that was not the ease the Police were setting up. They were setting up that the ear was in fact committing a breach of the hv-laws, and while the officers were ’endeavouring to obtain material to prosecute for that breach, Valentine endeavoured to stop the man.
UNHAPPY CTRL. HAAIILTON, Jan. 13. “I do not think this girl’s home influence is in her best interests,” commented Afr AYyvern Wilson, S.AI., at the Hamilton Court to-day, in admitting a 17-year old Alorrinsville girl to probation for 12 months on a charge which she admitted, of attempting to take her life. According to the police, the girl some time ago drank from a bottle marked poison, and yesterday she again threatened to take her life. Her parents had her arrested, assorting that they were unable to keep her under control. Her father, a man of GO. admitted that lie never took his children to any iiniusemiifii. and \iever .allowed his girls to attend dances. His Worship: “I think it is your duty to take your children onT. Toil cannot expect them to sit at homo with their parents all the time. As far as pulses of life are concerned, you have not much in common with your girl.” The mother said the girl could not agree with her sister and was in the habit of going out with boys. She had climbed out of a window on one oe—i-non and Iru 1 also threatened run away with a circus hand. His Worship considered that the girl would he better out working for her living, as she desired to do. provided she was under proper supervision. This would he hotter than remaining at home, quarrelling with her siseter, and out of sympathy with her parents.
INFANT DROWNED IN CASK. GISBORNE. Jan. 12. While playing at the hack door of his mother’s home. Norman Douglas Himblor, the two-year-old son of Doris llimhlcr. fell into a ten gallon cask of water and was drowned. The child was missed only a few minutes, and was found head down in a cask. A doctor was summoned, hut life was extinct.
