A party of scientists and others left Opotiki on Sunday morning by the' launch Whaknri for White Island, states the Opotiki correspondent of the “Post.” New.s received pfi Monday states that the party arrived in the afternoon and made a difficult landing in a basket, as there was u rough sea running. The party includes Dr ATarsden. Director of Industrial and Scientific Research, Messrs Campbell. Rice, and Welsh, Dr Farr and Miss Farr. Their Intention is to undertake scientific observations. White Island appeared from Opotiki to be extremely active. There was a huge billow of steam mounting thousands of feet above the land. It was the intention of the party to return to the mainland about Wednesday. Reliable suit eases and travelling bags to lie cleared at ridiculous prices. W. 11. Stopforth.—-Advt. The weekly stock sale at Addington on Wednesday was generally satisfactory from the point of view of vendors. Fat sheep, fat cattle, and fat lambs all improved in price, and there was also an improvement in the values of store lambs. The entry of fat sheep was short, there being barely sufficient to meet the requirements of butchers. Values improved by Is Cd to 2s a bead on late rates, and generally prices were too high for exporters to buy to any extent. Good sorts of fat cattle were better thaii they were last week by 20s a bead, and, in the case of fat lambs, the rise averaged from Is to Is 6d a head in advance of fast week’s values. Forward store cattle wore in demand, and dairy cattle were also inquired for. Yealors, which were ill short supply, made bettor prices than they did last week. Haveners, especially the heavier sorts, sold cheaply, and porkers, while they opened well, declined in price in the later stages of the sale. Store pigs made late rates.
