(By Telegraph—Per Press Association.) CHILD’S DEATH. AUCKLAND, Jan. 12. Zune Unis Nation, aged 4, a daughter of George Howe Nation, died at the hospital, apparently from an overdose of pills. 'me father of the child, giving evidence at the enquiry, said he was in the hospital about three months ago, and when he left he was given by a nurse about thirty small pills, which he kept in a small box in his bedroom. About a month ago his wife gave Zane half a pill and Noroen, another daughter, the other half of the pill. Last night when going out his wife gave the children half a pill each. He and his wife were in the garden when Xorcen told them that Zane was sick. They found the pill box empty and live pills on the floor. Zane was very sick, her limbs were twitching. A doctor was

called at eight o’clock, and the child sent to the hospital where -she died at mid-night. The inquest was adjourned sine die. TIMBER WORKKRS DISPUTE. AUCKLAND, Jan. 12. AVlien the parties assembled at • tho Conciliation Council to-day to consider the timber workers dispute, the employees advocate (E. Phelan) refused to confer with the employers until the Arbitration Court has decided for or against a Dominion award, as the Auckland Union has affirmed the principle of a Dominion award and lie. strenuously opposed the application of the other side for a separate district award. The question in dispute was ultimately referred to the Court for decision.

TWO SHOPS BURNT. GISBORNE, Jan. 12. A fire gutted two shops in Cook Street, Toiaga Bay, at an early hour this morning. The buildings were owned by W. A. Tulloch, of Auckland, and occupied by W. Fox, tailor, and A. Singe, hairdresser.

SERIOUS FIRE. AIARTON, Jan. 12. A lire at o’clock this morning totally destroyed tho premises of Barrand and Abraham, farmers merchants. The building of two storeys was very old. The flames had a good hold when discovered. A nightwatchman attempted to arouse the manager. Keeling, who was sleeping on the top storey. Getting no reply, the watchman thought the manager was nut of town. A few minutes later Keeling, who was soundly asleep. Was awakened with his room full of smoke, lie escaped hv a window and got down by the firm’s signboard just in time. A second later the whole building was ablaze. The premises contained inflammable material which menaced the adjoining White Hart Hotel and Farmers Co-op premises, but the brigade made a wonderful save of these buildings and confined the outbreak to Barrands, which is now completely ruined. The cost of the damage is unknown, hut it is believed will run to several thousands. Insurances on building -£2OOO, and stock £2500. In Commercial Union.

UNEMPLOYED. WANGANUI. Jan. 12. A few days ago Mayor Rogers wired to the Premier for relief for unemployed here and received a reply that Departmental figures showed only six unemployed in Wanganui. This morning a meeting of unemployed was called by the Mayor, when 270 registered. Practically all were labourers. In addition there are a large number of young students who have just left the secondary school seeking employment. Resolutions were passed asking the Government to lake immediate steps to relieve ilie situation and protesting strongly against immigrants being brought into the country while the present conditions existed
