OLYMPIC TRIALS.
ACSTii ALIAN ATHLETES. SYDNEY, Jan. 7. The Australian National Games carnival, held as a preliminary to choosing Olympic competitors, was commenced on the Manly Oval to-day, all the leading Australian athletes competing. Carlton, who had only landed from the New Zealand steamer this morning. won the hundred metres in eleven seconds. In tile running high jump, L. Mason (Victoria) created a new State record, clearing Oft 2in and defeating Davidson, the Australian and New Zealand title-holder. Other winners were:— 110 Metres Hurdles—A. Watson (Victoria). Time—lfisee. Throwing tlio Javelin.—O. Mi" (New South Wales). Distance—l46ft 3in--200 Metres. — A. Walker (New South Wales). Time—22 3-ssee. 1500 Metres—f. Marlin (New South Wales). Time—lmin 20 2-ssee. 800 Metres—G. Stuart (New South Wales). Time—2min Ssee. Running Broad Jump—C. Ebert (New South Wales). Distance —22ft. Hop. Stop and Jump—E. Ebert. Distance—lsft lin. Ebert beat Winter, holder of the world’s record, who was out of form, by an inch. In the women’s events, Miss Winter won the running high jump, clearing 4ft 7in, and establishing a State record. Mi ss E. Robinson won the hundred metres in 13 l-ssoc.
Cycling events wore won ns follow : 1000 Metres Olympic Trial.—T. Stai-.-den (New South Wales). Time—l min IC> 2-sscc. One Mile Junior Championship of Australia—L. Standon. Time—2min 17 sec. One Mile Senior Championship—D. Gray 1, R. W. Lamb 2. Time—2min 13sec. J. Standen finished first, but was disqualified owing to alleged interference with Gray. Senior Five Miles Championship—l. Standen. Time—l2min 14 2-ssco.
