(By Telegraph—Per Press Association.} MOTOR CAB AND LORRY. WOOD VI LLE, Jan. 9. At Kiritaki crossing on the main road near Dannevirke this morning, a motor lorry driven hy Jack Brighouse collided with a White Star service car. The driver of the sorbite car and .Miss Markham, of Wellington, sitting in the front seat were uninjured, but a Chinaman in the back seat was thrown out, sulleriug bad facial injuries. The service ear was damaged. The lorry was undamaged. Both were travelling slow. HOMESTEAD BLUNT. OISBOBXE, Jan. 9. A homestead at Arowhnna Station, an eleven-roomed dwelling, owned by IV. D. Lysnar. M.P., 40 miles from Gisborne was destroyed by fire early this morning. Lysnar and bis housekeeper were both roused from sleep ami escaped hurriedly managing to save a few personal effects only.
GAMTXG CHARGES. ELTHAM. .Tan. 7. On charges of using premises in Elthain as common gaming houses, and carrying on a business of bookmaking. John Dewar -McKay, ironmonger, and Antonio Novak. restaurant keeper, wore to-day remanded to appear at the Court on Saturday next at Eltham. Bail at £l2O each "'as allowed. PETTY THIEVING. WELLINGTON. Jan. 7. Certain petty thieving, which coincided with the visit of Wirth's Circus to places in the South Island, resulted in a search warrant being Issued in Wellington yesterday. The warrant was issued by Detec-tive-Sergeant Jnrrold and other detectives. and several travelling rugs, shirts, collars and gloves were taken possession of hy the police.
Three circus Hands, Robert- Edward Butcher. 20. Robert Landlord, 21, and Ernest Sydney Stewart. 20, were arrested and (barged with having received property knowing it to have been dishonestly obtained. They were remanded to-dav till Januarv 10.
Two charges involving property to the value of £2l. were made against Laudford and Stewart, who wore (■barged with receiving property, valued at £2. and Butcher, of property valued at £2 4.s Gd.
YOUTH DROWNED. INVERCARGILL, Jan. 8. Angus Ronnie llihhs. aged 18, was drowned while bathing in the Aparima River, near Fairfax. He went for a bathe with an elder brother, Clarence Herbert Hibbs, who, when he noticed Angus in difficulties, made a gallant attempt at rescue. His efforts exhausted him and he struggled to the hank in a state of collapse, lying practically insensible for ten minutes. The body of Angus was later recovered in eight feet of water. At the inquest a verdict of accidentally drowned was returned. POUND DEAD ON ROAD. MASTERTON. January 9. John Colin Chambers, an employee of the Maurioeville County Council was found lying dead on the road at Hastwell (near Maugiimahoe) at midday on Sunday. It was found that Chambers’ neck was broken, and it is per.simied that he was thrown from his horse. He was seen riding in the vicinity that morning. Deceased was I 1 years of age. and leaves a widow and two children.
LORRY DRIVER SUCCUMBS. CM XISTCII URC'H. January 9.
James Porter, who lived at Queen Street, Xpreydon, died in the hospital this morning, following injuries received in an accident on Saturday night.
Porter was driving a motor lorry towards the city. He swerved to avoid a car. and the lorry struck a post. Porter was admitted to the hospital unconscious, and died at 2.39 a.m. Two other occupants of the lorry escaped serious injury.
BATHING FATALITY. PALMERSTON X.. Jan. 10.
A bathing tragedy occurred at Poliangina river at Aslihurst yesterday afternoon, the victim being Denis Crowley, a carrier, of Aslihurst, aged 10. Deceased m company with another man was swimming in a pool, when he apparently collapsed, death being due, it is believed, to heart failure.
