PLUNKET SHIELD. (Australian & N.Z. Cable Association.) AUCKLAND, Jan. 7. The Shield match, Auckland v. Canterbury, was continued at Eden Park yesterday, on a good wicket, and in fine weather. Auckland’s first innings closed for 198, Mills scoring 64. This left, the visitors with a- first innings lead of 46. Canterbury in the second innings were dismissed for 251, due chiefly to fine howling by Weir, an 18-year-old bowler, making his first appearance in representative cricket. Page and Nixon howled well for Canterbury. Auckland, in the second innings scored 8, without a loss, before an appeal against the light was upheld.

In the Sheffield Shield match. South Australia in the nrst innings made 248 (Ryan 41, Hack 50, Grimmett 54, Alexander 48). Bowling: Nicholls took 5 wickets for 115, and McNamee 2 for 50. The weather was fine and the wicket good. The partnership between Hack and Grimmett was responsible for live-

lv scoring, despite frequent changes in howling. Grimniett gave an unaccepted chance off Xieliolls, and another later. Alexander joined Grimmeti after Hack went, and pasted the bowling, running up his score in quick time. With his departure the tail was quickly disposed of. Davidson showed excellent form as a wicketkeeper. New South Wales lost three wickets for 2OS (Jackson not out 112. Kippax 58, 11 at cl iff e not out 22). Xew South Wales started the second innings badly, but after two good wickets had gone cheaply, young Jackson and Kippax became partnered and thing's took' a turn. Jackson was brilliant, and Kippax steady and punishing. They brought 150 on to the hoard before the partnership was dissolved. Ratcliffe shaped well.
