Canterbury, which commenced at Eden Park to-day, was in an interesting position when stumps were drawn. Canterbury, after a good start, lost several wickets cheaply. The later batsmen came to light opportunely and the score was taken to 241.
Bow-ley and Mills opened the Auckland innings brightly, but after Bowley’s dismissal, Cooper was the only batsman to stay with Mills. He scored 40 and Mills was 50, not out, when stumps were drawn. Anthony howled very soldilv for Auckland, hut the best howling of the match was after tea this afternoon when Merritt and Newman pinned the batsmen to a purely defensive game. Scores:—

WELLINGTON. WELLINGTON, Jan. 6. A '-bright day’s cricket was witnessed at the Basin Reserve to-day inthe special match between the Otago and the Wellington rep. elevens. The weather was ideal, the wicket firm and tho outfield fast.
Wellington made 3(53 in their first innings, particularly bright cricket being shown by Lainason and Lambert. Tho Otago team were severely handicapped through their professional T. O. Eastman, having to retire, suffering from the effects of the strain lie. received here a couple of months ago. when playing for The Rest ol New Zealand against New Zealand.
The Otago men, on going to the wickets, struck Mnssely in deadly form and the youthful Institute trundler dismissed three batsmen at a cost of 8 runs. A. AY. Alloo. the Otago enpt. and R. The Sheffield Shield match, New South Wales against South Australia, commenced to-day. The local side, batting first, made 291 (Jackson 131, Audreys 44).- Bowling, Scott took two wickets for 57, AVall 4 for 51. and Grimmett 2 for 106.
South Australia in the first innings lost three wickets for 62 (Ryan, not out, 30). The weather was fine and the wicket, which was covered overnight during the rain, was easy. New South AVales failed badly, the wickets falling rapidly. Only two batsmen, .1.-me-son and Andrews, making anything like a stand. The batting was very dull on the dead wicket, but after luncheon, the wicket was much faster and the partnership of Jackson and Andrews carried the score along miic.i more quick!J. Jackson snis tie onstanding batsman of the day. A - though he bitted very slowly before luncheon, afterwards he played a splendid inniigs and saved New • < l ’ l 1 AVales from it debacle. South Australia opened sensntionallv a wicket being down first ball and a few minutes later a second wicket fell. Ryan then played carefully, and stopped the rot.
