Airey and Tattersall opened, and with the score at 39, Airey was caught in the slips o(F Alloo by Vorroth. 39-1-17. La mason was next and be and Tattersall carried the score to 86, when the latter was stumped by Galland off Alloo. 80-2-24. Dustin was next. At 108 La mason caught McMullnn off Douglas. 108-3-53. Lambert followed and the score at the luncheon adjournment was 3 for 174. Lambert 40, Dustin 24, extras 10. ! Can. v. A tick.
PLUNKET SHIELD. AUCKLAND, Jan. 0. The Plunket Shield match, Auckland v. Canterbury commenced in the forenoon Canterbury batting first. The score at 12.30 o’clock was:—Gregory (not out) 31, Hamilton, l.b.w. b Anthony 27, Jacobs, 1, Rowley 1, Pane (not out) 0, extras 3. Total 2 for 02. Fine weather prevailed for the second Plunket Shield match here. Plav commenced at 11.30 a.m. The teams are:
Canterbury—Page (rapt), Hayes, Newman. Evans, McEwin, Jacobs. Merritt, Nixon, Read, Hamilton, and Gregory. Auckland—Daere (©apt), Rowley, Anthony, Cooper, Garrard. Gillespie, Matiieson. Scott, G. L. Weir, Player, Mills.
Canterbury won the toss and batted first on a fast wicket, Gregory and Hamilton being the opening batsmen. Matiieson’,s first over yielded 3 singles. Player went on at the other end. Gregory square cutting his initial hall for 3. Playing cautiously the batsmen raised double figures in 10 minutes. Gregory got double figures ill 20 minutes. Neither batsmen were troubled by the bowling. Although Player was keeping a nice length, Hamilton hit the first boundary off Player. For half a-n hour’s plav thirty was sent up. G. L. Weir replaced Player, Gregory turning him quickly for a brace and singled him to the on and off. Canterbury ran well between wickets and scoring short ones. At 35 Anthony replaced Matiieson, Gregory slamming the first ball through covers to the fence. Weir dropped a short one. Next over Gregory pulled it to the boundary. Hamilton cut Anthony for a couple and then pulled him to the boundary for four, bringing the total up to 50 in 52 minutes. The opening pair were playing confidently and brightly, both obviously bouton jjjettiii'x runs. Tin ini I ton wn.s then dropped by Matiieson off Weir at leg and that batsman began to open out with hard drives. A couple of good strokes being cut off on line. Gregory escaped a chance of stumping off Anthony, and after a bye had been run, the trundler got Hamilton leg before. 56-1-27.
