The start was delayed owing to rain overnight. The wicket was easy. Sutcliffe had the best knock of the tour, -scoring freely all round till 99, when he played on Bissett. AM CTO RiT A AAMNS. MELBOURNE. Jan. 3. South Australia, in the second innings of the Sheffield Shield match made 283 (Schneider 113. Harris 71). Bowling. Morton took three wickets for 57 runs. Ironmonger three lor (>,' Victoria won by an innings and 35 runs. The weather was line and the wicket good. The scoring was painfully slow, the Southerners fighting unavnilingly to avert outright defeat. Schneider played a sound fighting innings, and appeared well set when stumped. Auckland won the first Plunket Shield match, heating Otago hv sixwickets. The weather was again fine, and the wicket in perfect condition. Otago took the overnight score to 315, Alloo being dismissed when only three short of a century. He had played a fine innings. Elmos, a young left-hander also hatted well for 16. Rowley and Mills gave Auckland a good start, and put on over 150 in a fine opening partnership. This was followed by another good partnership between Anthony and Cooper, which paved the way for victory. As an exhibition of hatting, Mills’s innings this afternoon was the host of the match, but he was not up against adversity to the same extent as were AlcMullnnd and Alloo yesterday.
