PRELIMINARY ARRAN (: F .11F NTS MADE. AV ELLINGTON. Dec. 28. An important step forward has been taken in the movement to establish a cereal research laboratory in Christchurch, a meeting of representative interests having made preliminory arrangements for proceeding with the work ‘fit once. The proposal is the outcome of legislation passed during the session, providing for the adoption of a scheme, and for contributions by persons engaged in the- growing of wheat and in related industries towards the

cost of carrying out scientific investigations by the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research. Levies are to lie paid by the interests concerned, the wheat’growers, the millers and the persons taking delivery of flour or wheatmeal from the mills. The levy is not to exceed ltd for every fifty bushels of wheat a grower delivers to a miller a grain merchant, for every ton of flour or wheatmeal a miller delivers from his mill, or for every ton of flour or wheatmeal of which delivery is taken.

The inaugural meeting, which was convened by the secretary of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Rosen eh (Dr E. Marsden), was attended also by the following:—Dr F. A\ . Hilgendnrf. representing Lincoln Colllego, who presided, Messrs J. D. Hall, J. Cam- and R. H. McMillan (Farmers’ Union). Afessrs R. Iv. Ireland. and R. .T. Lyons (millers), Afessrs F. AV. Hawker and C. F. Boon (bakers). Professor IT. G. Denham, of Canterbury College, and Air G. IT. Holford. honorary secretary. The proposed regulations for the administration of the laliorntor were considered, and with one or two minor alterations, which will he submitted to the Government. were unanimously approved. The regulations cover the committee’s levies and general administration. Tt was decided that work should he commenced forthwith with crop certification under the supervision of Dr Hildendorf and Air Hndfield, Government Agrrouomisl. An executive committee, consisting of Dr Ililgendorf, Professor Denham and Messrs Hndfield, Hawker, and Lyons, was appointed to deal with arrangements for accommodation for a laboratory, its equipment, and preliminary staffing.
