Dr Carl Tan/.er, a foppish young fellow, enters, and the doctor asks him to entertain Laura, while his conference is on with the Countess, Tnnzor caresses her, and Laura is furiously angry. The Countess meanwhile has urged the doctor to go to Oldenheim the next day to choose the site, and lie notifies his intention of leaving his wife for a few days. She bogs him to let her go with him, hut lie refuses, telling her that she is to stay with her old nurse Xantei
