1 (By Telegraph—Per Press Association. DEATH OF SERGEANT BARRETT. NELSON. Dec. 19. Obituary—Senior-Sergeant Thomas Barrett. He was previously stationed at Wellington, Christchurch, Dunedin. and Hokitika. Deceased had been in ill health for the past eighteen months, but resumed bis duties on Monday last. He was due to retire from the Police Force in March next. RECORD TONNAGE. WELLINGTON. Dec. 19. A licet of overseas liners in port and due to arrive to-day constitute the largest, number of big ships seen at Wellington wharves for a long period. I The total tonnage of the fourteen liners in port is 110.723, and adding coastal ships the aggregate is 1-10,000 tons. KILLED BY BOLTING HORSE. AVAIROA. Dec. 10. At the inquest concerning the death of Leonard Hnnnnm. Borough employee. the Coroner, .Air Levvey. 9.. A?., returned a verdict that deceased met his death in tho Borough Yards as a result of extensive lacerations to the lung, due to injuries received by being crushed against a post through a horse bolting while being unharnessed.
IM.AIIG RANTS ARRIVE. AYELLTGNTON, Dec. 19. Ninety-five women were included among 135 assisted passengers who arrived hv tho Tamaroa from England yesterday. Among the party were 23 domestic servants. MAORI’S SUDDEN DEATH. GISBORNE, December 19. The sudden death of a Maori, Jpi 11 onni aged -12 at Xgarnpa is reported. A coroner’s inquest has been ordered. HORNED BY COW. GISBORNE, Dec. 19. John Henry Smith aged 51 was admitted to the hospitall as a result of being homed by a cow. LEG AMPUTATED. CHRISTCHURCH. Dec. 19. The amputation of his fractured leg was necessary in the case of Roy Sullivan. aged 20, who was involved in a collision between his motor cycle and a motor car driven by Joseph H. Neale at the intersection of Barbadocs Street and Ferry Road at 5 p.m. yesterday. Sullivan’s condition is reported to lie satisfactory.
SHUNTER INJURED. AUCKLAND, Dec. 19. Through falling between the Newmarket railway platform and a slowmoving train at (1.30 p.m. on Saturday, Shunter Geo. Goldsmith, aged 3(1, married, had his right arm severed. His condition is serious. FOIL.I MR ALP. DEAD. GISBORNE. Dec. 19. Advice has been received of the death at Tauranga of Hugh Joseph Finn, barrister, of Gisborne. Finn represented Wakatipu in Parliament from 1879 to 1882 and with C. A. Delauton of this town, was the only surviving member of Parliament during the Hall Government. AN ACCIDENT. GEFYAIOUTH, Dec. 19. Reginald Daniels, employed at the Rope road State mine at Rewanui was caught between a rake of trucss and crushed in the stomach. He was hospital led.
