SHEFFIELD SHIELD GAMES. (Australian & N.Z. Cable Association.) Received this day at 8 a.m.) MELBOURNE, Dec. 17.. The Sheffield Shield match, Victoria v. Queensland has commenced. The former were two for four hundred (Woodful 31, Ponsford not out 234, Hendry 129) when stumps were drawn. The weather was fine and hot. Queensland won the toss and unaccountably sent Victoria in on a perfect wicket. The scoring up to luncheon was slow against the bowling which was not dangerous, but after the adjournment the cricket livened and Ponsford’s partnership with Hendry carried the score along at a fast rate. Ponsford was hatting at the top of his form, hitting solidly at everything sent down. Hendry played careful sound cricket and took no risks. Ponsford lias now made a century and each of the last seven Sheffield matches in which hieilias played.

ADELAIDE, Dec. 17. The Sheffield Shield match New South Wales v. South Australia, has commenced. The former lost .seven wickets for 400 (Phillips 112, Andrews 58, Kippax temporarily retired 81. Soanes 44, Bradman not out 05) when stumps were drawn. The weather was fine and wicket fast and good. Phillips and Al.endows played a sparkling innings, the latter footwork being magnificent, while Phillips made many fine shots. Phillips, however, facing Grimmett, whose howling was a model of consistency and accuracy showed indecision. hut later played more confidently and pla.vod a. splendid fighting innings. The fielding throughout was very keen, hut the bowling left much to be desired. Kippax gave glimpses of perfect timing and artistic hatting, hut was affected by the sun and had to retire for treatment. Soanes and Bradman both played soundly and confidently.
