This was due to the yarding of twelve races being too null'll for butchers’ requirements, and the market gradually slipped until at the end it was down to the level of export prices. There was a rise of nil out 2s a head in fat lambs, owing to exporters operating in a yarding which was expected to have been bigger. Ihe bfeef niitvicet opened somewhat weaker, hut towards the end last week's prices were maintained, and in s:m:- cases exceeded. The sale of stores was dull, with the entry much larger than usual. Bnii'y cbws sold fairly well, and verniers went at late rates. Heavy entries in the fat and store pig sections caused prices to weaken. F;it cattle—Consignments were forward from the West Const and other outside districts. Store entile—An entry larger than usual included a line of yearling and two-year old steers and heifers froiii the Davhnr Station. Backward sorts were very slow of sale, and generally the entry was hard to quit. Values were: Station two-year old steers to £4 16s 6d, yearling steers to £3 15s, yearling heifers to £2 18s 6d, good cows to £4 13s.
"Dairy cattle—Brices did not vary very milch from the last week’s sale in the ease of dairy cattle, in which yarding were a few good cows. The offering was iiot as large as at the previous sale. Fat. lambs—The entry was the poorest for years. Values were: Prime heavy lambs 30s to 35s lOd. medium prime lambs 27s to 28s 6d. light lambs 23s to 26s 6d. Store sheep—Entries at recent sales wero eclipsed by the large number of sheep in the store pens, which included many good-sized lines of wethers.
Values, for shorn sheep, except where otherwise stated, were: Forward four and six-tooth wethers 24s 3d to 26s sd, ordinary four and .six-tooth withers 22s 9d to 23s 6d. two-toothed crossbred wethers 2()s to 24s sd, two-toothed shorn ewes 27s 6d. crossbred ewe hoggets 33s 7d to 34s sd, aged owes 13s 7d, aged ewes and lambs 17s lid to 18s 3d. good failing-mouthed woolly ewes and lambs 23s 9d. Pigs—For the first time since 1910 or 19.11, fat pigs were bought for export, about 100 head being secured for shipment. The entry of porkers was very large, with a medium one of bneoners. The demand was weaker throughout. Values were: Choppers 30s to £l. baeoners 53s io 60s. heavy baconers 65s to 70s. average price per pound 4fd to s}; porkers 35s to 40s, heavy porkers 45s to 525. average price per pound ojd to 7-d. Few buyers were interested in the stores section, which contained a largo entry. Opening prices were from 5s to 6s a head below last, week’s rates for all classes, and even
then sales were difficult to make. Values were: AVeaners 9s to 14s 6d, good slips 11s to 10s, medium stores 17s to 21s,' large stores 22s to 30s, extra good stores to 34-s.
