The Borough authorities in particular through the efforts of the Town Clerk, are making a special effort to have the sea beach cleaned up and kept clear of offensive matter. The access to the rubbish dump has been improved, and all carriers have been notified where to deposit the debris. Shop-keepers will do well to fall into line also, lor the intention is to enforce lenallies where the simple requirements ol the position are not complied with. Efforts in the [>ast to keep the beach cleat and sightly, have been rather spasmodic, hut it is the intention of the Borough officer to watch the position closely, and see that nothing offensive is done. The ocean bench should be one of the town’s best assets for rendezvous and recreation purposes. There is, tit till times, the opportunity for a healthy and invigorating walk along the seashore, hut there is nothing so disconcerting as to see waste matter tirelessly deposited in prominent places here it is tit once offensive. Pride in the appearance ot the town and its environment should induce the t itL.eiis to co-operate heartily in the move to keep the beach dear of olfensive matter, and tidy. This is the time lor spring cleaning, ami a clearing up of the beach front is certainly well overdue. The effort to arrest the sand di-ill by planting grasses etc. has been very successful. Once the leach is cleaned up definitely, that Work could Ini extended, and in addition to adding to the general appearance, will in effect assist also in the natural protection of the sea front, and by gradually building up the foreshore and holding it intact except under great extremity. The Borough Council is responsible just at present for a general policy of smartening, up the appearance of the town. It appears to lie working on right lines, and there is general commendation at the effort. The renewed policy in regard to the rubbish dump is undoubtedly something specially commendable, and it is to lie hoped the effort in that direction will he sustained and iho foreshore kept clear and maintained a.s the pleasant resort it should bo for the public and visitors to congregate and perambulate.
